MISA/ASIM Canada Negotiates National Deals With Vendors
One-stop Web page has special offers for municipalities
SASKATOON, SK , March 19, 2008 – Canadian municipalities now have a new channel for purchasing goods and services – a one-stop Web page that contains special offers from vendors that are uniform across the country.
The special-offers page appears on the national Web site of MISA/ASIM Canada as well as sites published by its member organizations. MISA/ASIM Canada was launched in June 2006 as the umbrella group for five regional associations promoting greater efficiency in municipal government through the application of information and communications technologies.
Publication of the special-offers page, which initially contains offers from three companies, marks the first time that municipalities across Canada have had equitably priced access to the same products and services.
“Municipal governments need to achieve greater efficiencies by collaborating to apply technologies to improve their processes, including procurement,” said Kevin Peacock, President of MISA/ASIM Canada and Branch Manager, Corporate Information Services for the City of Saskatoon.
“The innovative companies that have joined us to date in this initiative also recognize the fairness of offering standard prices to municipalities in all regions through national licensing and procurement agreements.”
Contracts with the three vendors – TELUS, Adobe Systems Canada and Chalk Media Corp. – were initially negotiated by MISA BC. They have now been extended nationally and are available through the MISA/ASIM Canada Web site to any municipality that is a member of any of the five associations within MISA/ASIM Canada.
TELUS has simultaneously established its own Web site, www.telus.com/misa, linked to the MISA/ASIM Canada site and describing its special offers in detail. In doing so it has become the first company ever to present a Web site devoted to products and services offered uniformly to Canadian municipalities.
“Municipalities, large or small, can benefit from access to a single resource offering solutions, products and packages designed specifically to address the needs of MISA/ASIM Canada members and municipal employees,” said Mike Martin, Vice President Public Sector Marketing for TELUS.
The TELUS site offers a variety of business solutions including bundled offers, term extensions and value-added services. Also available are resources to provide guidance on best practices for technology for the public sector, including white papers, case studies and research, along with advanced notice of new products and events such as conferences and webinars.
Ottawa-based Adobe Systems Canada is offering a standard 12-per-cent discount pricing on Adobe products to municipalities that are members of MISA/ASIM Canada associations. The pricing can be obtained by using MISA BC's CLP membership number, or by using the municipality’s own affiliate CLP membership number if it has one.
Adobe’s CLP programs are described at http://www.adobe.com/aboutadobe/openoptions/clp.html. Municipalities wishing to order Adobe products through the MISA/ASIM Canada special offer can contact Softchoice Corp. or any other Adobe authorized software reseller to ensure enrolment.
Chalk Media Corp. of Vancouver is participating in the MISA/ASIM Canada special-offers program through an “eUniversity” portal established on MISA BC’s Web site, www.misa.on.ca.
The portal provides access to more than 1,300 MindLeaders off-the-shelf courses targeting IT personnel and end users, available at uniformly discounted prices to authorized municipalities. Course-authoring software is also available for municipalities to produce their own courses. The agreement with Chalk also permits MISA BC to host vendor-supplied courses on the portal.
Any municipality within the membership of MISA/ASIM Canada associations wishing to make use of these Web-based training courses is asked to contact Colin Redwood of the Corporation of Delta, Chair of MISA BC’s Education Committee, at credwood@corp.delta.bc.ca.
Peacock said MISA/ASIM Canada is in talks with other companies and expects to see more offers posted on the national special-offers page in the near future.

MISA/ASIM Canada Has
National Deal With English Company
February 9, 2009 -- MISA/ASIM Canada has signed an agreement with Sophos plc of England to make available to municipalities an endpoint security product, Sophos Endpoint Security and Control, at discounted prices that are standard across the country.
The new agreement expands an existing program of MISA/ASIM Canada that provides one-stop access to special offers from vendors. It means that any municipality that is a member of one of the five associations within MISA/ASIM Canada has equitably priced access to the same products and services, regardless of size or location of the municipality.
“Since we announced this program in March 2008, an increasing number of vendors have approached us for discussions about participating,” said Daya Pillay, President of MISA/ASIM Canada and Manager of e-Commerce and Web Services for the Halifax Regional Municipality. “We are extremely pleased that Sophos has joined the program, demonstrating international interest among vendors in the Canadian municipal IT market.”
Sophos Endpoint Security and Control protects against malware, spyware, intrusions and unwanted applications. It also protects mobile devices and provides network access control.
The contract provides that Endpoint Security and Control will be available through a standing offer to the MISA/ASIM Canada community and purchased through a certified Sophos reseller in Canada. The product will be priced at three-year rates based on large-volume discounts, even if municipalities do not purchase the large volumes.
Sophos, www.sophos.com, based near Oxford, England, has a major presence in North America including a large development and technical support centre in Vancouver.
The special offer is being published on the Web site of MISA/ASIM Canada, www.misa-asim.ca, and distributed to its member organizations. MISA/ASIM Canada was launched in June 2006 as the umbrella group for five regional associations promoting greater efficiency in municipal government through the application of information and communications technologies.

Irish Company Offers Municipalities Text-Reading Software at Standard Discounts
February 12, 2009 – A software product designed to make Web sites more accessible by converting written texts to spoken words is being made available to municipalities through MISA/ASIM Canada at discounted prices that are standard across the country.
MISA/ASIM Canada has signed an agreement with Texthelp Systems Ltd., based in Northern Ireland, to make its BrowseAloud speech-enabling solution available at standard discounts to municipalities that are members of the five regional associations that comprise MISA/ASIM Canada.
The new agreement expands an existing program of MISA/ASIM Canada that provides one-stop access to special offers from vendors. Any municipality within MISA/ASIM Canada has equitably priced access to the same products and services, regardless of size or location of the municipality.
Daya Pillay, President of MISA/ASIM Canada and Manager of e-Commerce and Web Services for the Halifax Regional Municipality, said the timing of the BrowseAloud offer is fortuitous because municipalities are facing increased legal obligations and social responsibilities to make their public communications accessible to people with disabilities such as visual impairment.
“Texthelp Systems and the other companies within our Member Special Offers program deserve appreciation for recognizing the need for municipalities to build cooperative ways to deliver services and conduct business,” Pillay said.
BrowseAloud reads Web content aloud, making it more accessible to those with learning disabilities, dyslexia or visual impairments, or where English or French is a second language.
Municipalities will be able to purchases licences for the product direct from Texthelp Systems at standard prices discounted from regular levels, if they are members of MISA/ASIM Canada associations. Technical support will be available from Boston with a toll-free number.
Texthelp Systems, www.browsealoud.com, is based in Atrim, Northern Ireland, and is entering the Canadian municipal IT market through its agreement with MISA/ASIM Canada.

MISA/ASIM Canada Has Special Offer on Database Monitoring
Uniform offer for DesTech solution now available to Canadian municipalities
HALIFAX, August 10, 2009 – MISA/ASIM Canada has made available another special vendor offer to municipalities. The national association has concluded an agreement with DesTech Consulting & Education under which municipalities in the association’s member community can obtain contracts for DesTech’s Remote Database Monitoring solution at the best prices offered by the company in Canada.
Effective today, any municipality that is a member of one of the five regional associations within MISA/ASIM Canada can purchase the solution under the special pricing structure, available through www.misa-asim.ca or Web sites of the regional associations.
Toronto-based DesTech has confirmed that the prices for its database monitoring solution, under one-year or multi-year contracts, are substantially below current market prices. Furthermore, should any municipal customer at any time receive a price lower than the advertised price under the offer, that lower price will then apply to all participating customers.
The latter provision is being offered for the first time under MISA/ASIM Canada’s special-offers program, said Daya Pillay, President of MISA/ASIM Canada and Manager of e-Commerce and Web Services for the Halifax Regional Municipality.
“We have now established two levels of vendor offers under our program – platinum and gold,” Pillay said. “DesTech is the first to receive a platinum designation, meaning that municipal customers are guaranteed by the company that the price they receive will not be beaten.”
MISA/ASIM Canada announced in March 2008 its program of providing one-stop access to special offers from vendors. Any member municipality within MISA/ASIM Canada has equitably priced access to the same products and services, regardless of size or location of the municipality.
DesTech is the eighth company to join the special-offers program. The others are Adobe Systems Canada, Chalk Media Canada, Digital Boundary Group, Sophos PLC, TELUS and Texthelp Systems Ltd.
DesTech’s Remote Database Monitoring solution is designed to enable organizations to obtain maximum performance and uptime through proper database configuration and management, including emergency support and service. The solution is described at www.destech.com/remote_database_monitoring.asp.
Based in Toronto, DesTech was established in 1991 and specializes in providing technical solutions through system development consulting and education services.
