On May 6, the Town of Newmarket proudly announced its open data pilot project, OPENNewmarketat the Go Open Data Conference 2016 hosted by ventureLAB, a business and entrepreneurial support organization.
OPENNewmarket is a one-year open data pilot project that will allow the public to freely use, reuse and distribute machine-readable data maintained by the Town of Newmarket through an online catalogue on the Town's website.
"OPENNewmarket is a significant milestone in our community and aligns perfectly with Council's Strategic Priorities," says Newmarket Mayor Tony Van Bynen. "Open data will help Newmarket further promote an open, transparent and accountable government by making data readily accessible, increase efficiencies and promote community engagement and economic development."
Previously, data such as active developments in the community, information on parks, ward boundaries, waste and recycling as well as spatial data such as maps could be accessible online or upon request. Data was also provided to consultants working with the Town and to the public through requests under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection Privacy Act (MFIPPA).
OPENNewmarket will focus on providing data that is already accessible either online or by request in a machine-readable format. This data can be used to support research and produce new and valuable products and services like mobile apps.
The available data has been evaluated under a privacy assessment to ensure no personal information is made public. It is then evaluated for its completeness, accuracy and ability to be translated into different machine-readable formats.
After the one-year pilot project, OPENNewmarket will be reviewed to determine if and how an open data program can benefit the community, the potential impact on existing resources and any other challenges that arise and need to be considered.
