The County of Frontenac is taking part in Local Government Week in a different way this year. During its regular meeting on October 19, Council has reserved half an hour to address questions posed through Twitter from youth across the entire County about local government.

This year Local Government Week takes place October 16-22. It aims to increase youth and public awareness about the important role local government plays in our communities.

"When we were looking ahead at Local Government Week, we realized our monthly Council meeting is scheduled right in the middle of it this year," said Frontenac County clerk Jannette Amini. "Social media is a great way to reach students from all across our County regardless of their location, and to engage with many students in a reduced period of time without the need to travel."

Between 2 and 2:30 p.m. on October 19, students and their teachers can post questions for Council on Twitter. By including the hashtag #LGWFront in their posts, they ensure County staff will see them. Staff will then pose each query to Council and reply by tweet with Council's answer.

"Ensuring our students are engaged, civically-minded citizens is an important part of preparing students for our ever-changing world," says Limestone District School Board Chair Paula Murray. "We are pleased to partner with the County of Frontenac to offer this opportunity for direct engagement with our local municipal counterparts."

With this new social media initiative, Frontenac County is building on the success of the #LDSBprepared chat during Emergency Preparedness Week, in which students interacted with Emergency Management personnel. The event was ranked by Twitter Canada in their "Top 10 Made in Canada Stories". Since January this year, Frontenac County has also been live Tweeting during Council meetings.
