At its meeting on Monday, October 3, Town of Newmarket Council approved the Town's second Economic Development Strategy that will guide important economic development initiatives over the next three to five years and will set the tone for a community focused on innovation, development, partnerships and job creation.

"Council support for the new Economic Development Strategy - which is aligned with several of our key priorities - was unanimous," said Mayor Tony Van Bynen. "The Strategy is comprehensive and future-focussed and was created with the growth and success of our community in mind."

Over the course of the Strategy's implementation, the Town will work hard with both public- and private-sector partners to make significant progress in the areas of innovation, urbanization and collaboration, specifically as it relates to:

  • implementing affordable, ultra-high-speed broadband in Newmarket,
  • becoming a Canadian leader in suburban urbanization' and
  • building even more successful partnerships.

According to Mayor Van Bynen, the Strategy is a timely and perfect addition to the work that is already underway or recently completed within the community to positively impact the Town's economic development efforts.

"Just last week, I attended an official opening to celebrate substantial completion on the vivaNext rapid transit route along Davis Drive," he said. "Work on the Yonge Street corridor is well underway, we just opened the doors to our newly renovated Old Town Hall after a significant transformation, our new community gateway sign at Davis Drive and Main Street is drawing attention both locally and outside of our borders and we are continuing to be recognized as one of Canada's best places to live."

Developed in consultation with both private- and public-sector partners through the Newmarket Economic Development Advisory Committee (NEDAC) and the Community Collaborative Ecosystem(CCE), the new Economic Development Strategy reflects NEDAC's current perspective on Newmarket's economic future in light of changing economic circumstances and new trends and priorities, as well as Newmarket's designation as an Urban Growth Centre under the Government of Ontario's Places to Grow Act.
