Oshawa has received a gold Hermes Creative Award in the microsite category for the development of the City's new online community engagement website, Connect Oshawa (www.connectoshawa.ca) that launched fall 2015.
Designed to improve and increase community engagement opportunities, Connect Oshawa provides the ability for the City to share new programs and initiatives and receive online feedback from residents and stakeholders. As referenced in the 2015 - 2019 Oshawa Strategic Plan, the City of Oshawa values community engagement and has demonstrated its commitment to the process as the City conducts numerous community engagement projects throughout the year.
Since the launch, over twenty projects have been featured on Connect Oshawa. Current projects include Second Annual Energy Conservation Challenge, Let's Talk about Accessibility and Ward Boundary Review to name a few.
"This a great step forward in our efforts to become more accessible and available for residents' input and ideas," said Councillor Amy England, Chair of the Corporate Services Committee. "We would like to extend a huge thank you to those who have provided feedback and helped shape Oshawa."
Connect Oshawa's online tools are used in conjunction with traditional in-person community engagement methods so that meaningful two-way dialogue occurs between residents, stakeholders and the City on major projects.
Much like www.oshawa.ca, Connect Oshawa is accessible and mobile friendly, meaning that the site will resize accordingly to the device in use. It also offers a wide-range of new, innovative online tools, including:
- discussion forums,
- question and answer forums,
- online brainstorming,
- storytelling, and more.
Additionally, all these features and more are captured in a video, which was created to provide residents with a visual tour of the site. The video is available on the "OshawaCity" YouTube channel.
Connect Oshawa was developed by Bang the Table who are community engagement specialists and provide digital public engagement software solutions to government, public sector and private enterprise clients. Connect Oshawa also aligns with community engagement best practices and reflects the approach of the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2), who are considered experts in the field of public participation.
