In an effort to increase citizen feedback and engagement in the annual budget process, the Town of Aurora is launching multiple online and offline tools to solicit feedback from residents on the use of their tax dollars.

Residents are being invited to participate in the 2017 municipal budget process by going online to Aurora's Citizen Budget, an interactive tool that allows taxpayers to examine 13 core municipal service areas and see how their allocation choices affect service levels. Residents will be able to see how their taxes may increase if they want to build a new community centre, or decrease if they want to reduce the number of programs available at recreation facilities.

"The Citizen Budget is truly an innovative approach to engaging citizens and providing us with the input and feedback we need to make the best decisions possible for the Town," said Mayor Geoffrey Dawe. "We want to see as many residents as possible participating in the 2017 budget process."

The 2017 Citizen Budget survey will be available until Monday, October 31 at and is open to Aurora residents only. Participants of the survey will be entered to win $250 towards their municipal tax account. For full contest rules, please visit the website.

The Town will also be using Twitter and Facebook to ask residents questions about their budget preferences using the hashtag #aurorabudget. In addition, a series of three videos will be posted to the Town's YouTube channel to increase education around how their tax dollars are spent and how the budget process works.

Over the coming months, representatives from the Town will be at events throughout Aurora, including Ribfest, Movies in the Park, the Aurora Farmers Market, asking citizens to complete the Citizen Budget survey on-site.

Citizens are also encouraged to attend council to find out more about the budget process. Meeting dates and times can be found at

Results will be compiled and presented to Council in November for consideration as part of the 2017 Budget process.
