Gerry Matte passed away peacefully, in Nanaimo, on March 5^th, 2023.  Gerry was a dedicated supporter of MISA at both the provincial and national levels.  

 Born and raised in Saskatchewan, Gerry began his career teaching computing science in the early 1970’s.  He found his passion in the IT industry, rising to a management position with the City of Regina, before moving to the District of Saanich, BC.  Gerry remained at Saanich for 21 years, retiring in 2010 as the department’s manager.

In Regina, Gerry was active in C.I.P.S. (Canadian Information Processing Society).  Arriving in BC, Gerry became involved in the startup of the MISA BC Chapter in 1994. He co-hosted the first MISA BC conference in Victoria and served on the Executive until his retirement in 2010.  Gerry was presented with a Lifetime membership to MISA BC to recognize his many years of contributions to the organization.

As a founding member of MISA-ASIM Canada, he remained on the Board to serve as Secretary until 2009.   Gerry’s contributions were recognized when he was awarded the prestigious Peter Bennett Award in 2009.

Following his retirement, Gerry continued to be active in the IT industry and MISA BC Alumni.  He pursued his passion for software development and built several custom applications.

Gerry treasured time with family and friends.  He enjoyed camping, fishing, and travelling.  Gerry is survived by his three children and their families.  He will be missed by his many MISA friends across the country.
